Historically the present territory of the municipality of RICAURTE, since the pre-Hispanic era has been inhabited by AWA indigenous communities, settled in the foothill of the mountain range on the soil of the basins of the rivers San Juan and Güiza that are part of the basin from Pacific.
In the municipal territory is located one of the main natural reserves of the department and the country called La Planada, which houses fog forests with special biotic characteristics, which has been considered as a great eco-tourist potential in the region
